Stepping out to School
Try to recall memories during the school time, and you will find they are mixed by bitter and sweet. Most parents tend to send their children to the traditional schools, while few parents choose homeschooling or a specific educational institution. Nonetheless, informal education is not suitable for everyone. Parents should select traditional schooling since it has advantages that homeschooling cannot replace, such as the opportunity of interacting with others and the number of resources.
First, when children go to school, they need to interact with others. It is a great chance to train children’s social abilities. According to the report by Invictus International School (2022.10.06), social ability is not an innate ability but an acquirable skill for children. They probably meet others with special diseases or someone who likes to play a prank on classmates at school, and children have to learn how to get along with those people. Via experiences of communicating with others, children will gradually get social abilities. Furthermore, obtaining the fundamental manners of interacting with elders is crucial in life. It will be impolite to talk with elders if we use the same way as we face peers and friends to teachers, professors, and bosses. The school environment gives practical situations to cultivate children’s etiquette. To sum up, traditional education can provide children to learn how to cope with interpersonal relationship between different ages’ people at school.
Next, traditional schooling can provide abundant resources and specialized education. Various kinds of resources not only broaden students’ horizons but also offer students different choices in the future. For instance, the experiment class in science often offers lots of physical and chemical tools in the school lab. Through operating those tools, students will get more vivid and impressive experiences based on what they have read in the textbooks. Moreover, teachers and textbooks can guide students to learn the subject knowledge more systematically. Kensington (n.d.) points out that before teachers start teaching at school, they have to pass tests and get certification first, and this kind of regulation proves that teachers have enough knowledge and ability in education. Except for prescribed schoolbooks, some teachers supply additional materials to students. In conclusion, schools usually can offer more complete sources than homeschooling do.
Although traditional schooling has benefits, some may argue that staying at school will limit students’ time schedules. It is true that school time takes up a large percentage of students' daily and weekly routines. Yet, under the time limitation, it lets students learn how to use the time after school and arrange their schedules. According to the report by Allison Academy (2021.07.06), if students can control their rest time, they can prioritize their school tasks and have better academic performance, developing more extracurricular interests. For instance, students can utilize break time to finish some simple works that are able to be done in a short time, and there will be more free time so that they can plan to do whatever they want. In addition, whether students focus on classes, they will not need to spend lots of time reviewing the texts. During school days, students should not only learn professional knowledge but also obtain the ability of time management.
For reasons mentioned above, traditional schooling may be a better choice for parents. Following the conventional schooling can give children more thorough education, and parents do not need to put all efforts on teaching their children. Homeschooling can be a flexible option for families that may need it as not everyone has to walk in the same way. Children do not have the ability to decide everything when they are young, so parents should be discreet when making a decision for children.
